March 25, 2022 - Lost Cabin Fire

Lost Cabin Fire

2:30 pm  3/26/22 Update

100% contained. Crews will continue to mop up and monitor the site for the next few days until they can call it "controlled" and "out". 

10:30 am  3/26/22 Update

23 firefighters are working on mopping up the fire today.  GPS mapped the burn area at 6.5 acres, with no additional growth overnight.  Crews will remain on scene today.

Lost Cabin Trail #2 is still closed.

5:30 p.m. Update 

Fire crews have established a handline around the fire, and are calling it 50% contained. The burn area remains at 5 acres. There is a lot of heavy down fuel in the interior that continues to burn down, and smoke will remain visible as these fuels are consumed. Crews will remain on scene to mop-up and monitor through the weekend.

Location: Black Elk Wilderness Area, along Lost Cabin Trail #2, approximately 1 mile northwest of Black Elk Peak

Size: Initial size up is 5 acres.

10 a.m. Update

Resources: Federal, State and Local.  Hand crew, Blackhawk Helicopters from South Dakota National Guard will be dipping water from Sheridan Lake. 

Cause: Under investigation.

Additional information:   The fire is currently burning in heavy dead and down trees. A closure order for Trail #2 is being processed. Lost Cabin Trail #2 will be closed from Palmer Creek Trailhead all the way to Trail #9.  For safety, the public is asked to stay away from this area until the fire has been put out.
