Custer, SD, Jul. 24, 2020 – Firefighters will continue to monitor the burn area of the Black Elk Fire that was first reported Wednesday afternoon in the Black Elk Wilderness. As of 5:00 PM today the fire burned 7.6 acres and is 100% contained.

Due to the containment of the fire, a number of resources have been demobilized. A 20-person hand crew, a National Guard Blackhawk Helicopter and a Rapid Extraction Module will remain in the area and continue to work throughout the weekend.

Starting on Saturday July 25th, the emergency closure order for Black Elk Wilderness that was put in place for public and wildland firefighter safety will be lifted. The public is asked not to go into the burned area as hazards still remain. Additionally, temporary flight restriction that was put in place restricting aircraft will be lifted at 8:00 PM tonight.

“I am grateful for the efforts of our firefighters, our partners who assisted with the fire effort, and the cooperation of the public allowing the firefighters to quickly respond and contain this fire. The Black Elk Wilderness is an incredible gem and enjoyed by our visitors as well as our local communities. I am thankful for all the assistance and cooperation” said Tracy Anderson, Hell Canyon District Ranger.

The fire burned in heavy dead and downed timber in steep and remote terrain. Cause of the fire is a lightning strike from July 20, 2020.
