Feb 1, 2022 - Machine and Hand Piles to be burned

USFS to burn machine and hand piles

Starting February 1, 2022 Fire Staff from the Black Hills National Forest will begin burning machine pile located on the north and south side of Brownsville Road extending from North Rochford Road east to Brownsville.

Piles are located on approximately 800 acres. If conditions are favorable, burning may continue up to 2 weeks.

The Black Hills National Forest is also planning to burn 50 hand piles starting today (Feb. 1) - Thurs. (Feb. 3). The project is located approximately 10 miles SE of Sundance, WY.

Black Hills National Forest North Zone Fire (Spearfish, SD & Sundance, WY) burned approx. 200 hand piles in Spearfish Canyon last week.

Crews are working to reduce surface fuels from past tornado events in the Canyon, with particular attention to important values at risk (homes, watersheds, etc.).

The piles are located between Cheyenne Crossing and Savoy along HWY 14A.

As conditions permit (including snow coverage), fire crews plan to burn an additional 500-1000 hand & machine piles (in the Canyon) this winter.
