September 9, 2024 - First Thunder Fire Final Update

September 9, 2024 Update: The First Thunder Fire is now 100% contained. We would like to thank all of our cooperators including South Dakota Wildland Fire, Rapid City Pennington County Emergency Management, Pennington County Sheriff's Office and all of the Volunteer Fire Departments and other fire crews who helped keep the public informed and helped get this fire contained.

We would also like to thank the residents of Pennington County for being so supportive to our firefighters with your generous donations of food and water. And your cooperation with us during this incident.

First Thunder Fire Updates

Location: 3 miles southwest of Rapid City, SD

Fire Information: 605-923-8868

Start Date: 9/2/2024

Cause: Under Investigation

Size: 157 acres

Containment: 85%

September 6, 2024 – The Type 3 Incident Management team managing the First Thunder Fire will transition to the local unit led by a Type 4 Incident Commander, today, Friday September 6, 2024. Crews were able to get a good handle on the First Thunder Fire and is now 85% contained.

Firefighters and dozers continue to rehabilitate fire lines around the perimeter created during suppression operations. Other remaining resources continue to mop up smokes and patrol. In addition, crews will focus on returning roads to pre-fire conditions. Smoke may be visible for the next several days due to unburned fuel within the control lines.

The Type 3 Incident Management Team would like to thank all the agencies who assisted including; the Forest Service, South Dakota Wildland Fire, and Volunteer Fire Departments.

Note: This will be the last First Thunder fire update unless something significant happens. The information phone line will remain open.
