 South Dakota Wildland Fire Division

  • The Hot Springs District Office will be burning approximately 80 small slash piles in the Custer Highlands area starting today and throughout the week.
  • The Bear Mountain and Black Hat Handcrews will be burning approximately 100 small slash piles in the Boulder Canyon area.
  • Custer State Park and Custer District Office personnel will be burning small slash piles in the Bluebell and Stockade areas. 
All fire personnel will continue to monitor these slash piles throughout the week. Pile burning is a great tool to reduce fire risk within our communities.

Black Hills National Forest

  • Hell Canyon fire (southern hills) is burning approx. 70 large machine piles, 5 miles north and west of Custer, SD over the next couple of days. Smoke may be visible from Custer, Hwy 16 and 385 for several days.
  • Mystic fire (central hills) is igniting piles along Baker Park Road (FSR 358.1F), in the vicinity of the Boy Scout Camp, and 8 miles west of Hill City. Smoke will be visible along Sheridan Lake Road, from Custer and Hill City.
