Anti-Horse Broadcast Burn Postponed

Custer, SD, March 11, 2020 – The Anti-Horse prescribed burn planned for today, March 11, 2020 on Black Hills National Forest, Hell Canyon Ranger District has been postponed.

Fire officials have been monitoring the forecasted weather in the days leading up to the burn to determine if the conditions would be favorable. Prescribed fire projects require an extensive planning process to determine prescription parameters based off of Subject Matter Experts, local knowledge, as well as accepted scientific and computer based modeling.

“We have been monitoring our fuel moistures and conditions all week to ensure we were within the parameters of the burn plan to meet the objectives. With the spot weather forecast that we requested this morning, our models are showing several elements on the high end of our prescription. Based off of this information as well as the issuance of the Red Flag Warning by the National Weather Service, we have postponed the burn for today” said Josh Morgan, Burn Boss for the project as well as the Fuels Assistant Fire Management Officer for Hell Canyon Ranger District.

Fire officials said they will continue to look for windows in the future to proceed with the burn, but the Anti-Horse project will be postponed for the remainder of this week due to the expected snowfall in the coming days.
