There have been reports of wildfire smoke across
the region this morning. This smoke is originating from the massive wildfires
across northern Alberta and is not of local origin. The Chuckegg Creek fire is
currently the largest fire at 150,000 hectares (370,658 acres) but several
other large fires are also burning in the region.
Mystic fire will be burning piles today approximately 7 Miles NW of Hill City, SD near Deerfield Rd, Newton Fork Rd and McVey Rd. Smoke may be visible for several days in the surrounding areas.
Mystic fire (central hills) is burning piles today approximately 1 mile north of the 3 forks junction at Hwy 385 and Hwy 16. Area is adjacent to Whaley Rd. Smoke may be visible for several days in the surrounding areas.
Mystic fire (central hills) is burning piles off of Boulder Hill, Sheridan Lake Road and the 385 Brush Creek area today. Smoke will be visible from the Highway 16, Rockerville and surrounding areas.
Hell Canyon fire (southern hills) is burning piles 2 miles down Pleasant Valley Road, 1 mile SW of Highway 16 and the Stagg Road intersection, a half mile N of the Custer Airport and burning one additional pile, 6 miles down Pass Creek Road, SW of Custer, SD.
Mystic fire (central hills) is planning to burn piles 10 miles E of Hill City, SD & 15 miles SW of Rapid City, SD today. Piles are located near the junction of Highway 16 and 16A (Keystone “Y”). Smoke may be visible in the area for several days following ignitions.
Bearlodge fire (northeastern WY) is planning to burn piles from Moskee Road to Sand Creek to Surprise Gulch. Piles are part of the Mongoose timber sale, roughly 15 miles SE of Sundance, WY.
Mystic fire (central hills) is planning to burn a pile 2.5 miles northeast of Hill City, SD. The pile is located near the intersection of Mitchell Lake Rd and Highway 385. Smoke may also be visible from Highway 16.
Black Hills National Forest
Mystic Ranger District (central hills):
Planning to burn piles in the Pine Grove area sometime this week. Smoke may be visible from Rapid City and Rockerville. Also, planning to burn piles located in the Brush Creek, Hwy, 385 Victoria area. Smoke will be visible from Rapid City and near Pactola.
One pile will be burned near Rolling Hills and FSR 777 intersection. Smoke may be visible in the Nemo area.
Planning to burn along the Piedmont Fire Trail, east of Nemo, SD and on the west side of Rolling Hills Subdivision.
South Dakota Wildland Fire
The Hot Springs Field Office is burning slash piles off of Beardsley Drive.
The Bear Mountain Handcrew is currently burning slash piles in the Pactola Estates Area.
The Black Hat Handcrew continues to burn slash piles along Rockerville Road.
The Custer State Park Field Office is burning slash piles near Mt. Coolidge.
Hell Canyon fire (southern hills) is burning piles 3 miles northeast of Custer, SD near the Meeker Ranch and 3 miles southeast of Custer near Custer Mountain.
Starting tomorrow, (2/20/19) Mystic fire (central hills) will be burning piles approximately 9 Miles northwest of Hill City, SD above the Deerfield Park Subdivision. Smoke may be seen from Deerfield road and East Slate road.
Smoke may be visible for several days in the surrounding areas.
Hell Canyon fire (southern hills) is burning piles down Pleasant Valley Road and East of Meeker Cabin near Custer, SD.
Mystic fire (central hills) is burning machine piles off of Rolling Hills, Forest Road 777, and Stagebarn Canyon Road today. Smoke may be visible from the Rapid City/Blackhawk area for the next several days.
Northern Hills fire is planning to burn hand piles today on the west side of Tinton Road, southwest of the Spearfish Work Center.
Mystic fire (central hills) is planning to burn piles approximately 5 Miles NE of Hill City off on Hwy 385 in between three forks and Sheridan Lake. Smoke may be visible from Sheridan Lake, three forks and Hill City.
Forest Managers are continuing to reduce hazardous fuels across the Black Hills National Forest.
Hell Canyon (Southern Hills)
Firefighters are burning 6 large landing piles in the Pleasant Valley Area. Smoke may be visible for several days.
Mystic (Central Hills)
Crews are burning along Silver City Road.
Starting 2/14, crews will be burning approximately 9 miles NW of Hill City, SD above the Deerfield Park subdivision. Smoke may be seen from Deerfield Road, East Slate Road and surrounding areas for several days.
Firefighters are burning piles near Reynolds Road, approximately 10 miles SE of Sundance, WY.
Officials appreciate the support from local communities and said that reducing fuels this time of year makes fire suppression operations safer during the summer months.
Mystic fire (central hills) will be burning piles approximately 2 miles east of Hill City on Old Hill City Road, north of Ford Mountain and west of Ford Mountain Road. Smoke may be visible for several days in the surrounding areas.
Mystic fire is also burning west of the intersection of Hwy 385 and W Hwy 44, ¼ mile up Silver City Road.
Beginning today, Northern Hills fire will be burning east of Nemo, SD near the Piedmont Fire Trail, south of Nemo, north of Steamboat Rock Campground and in the Dalton Lake area.
Black Hills National Forest is burning machine piles off of Forest Service Road 150, located near Sheridan Lake Road and Nordsman Road. Smoke may be visible from Rapid City and surrounding areas for the next several days.
The Forest will also be burning piles, starting 2/7/19, down Pass Creek Road and Pleasant Valley Road about 8 miles SW of Custer, SD. They will also be burning in the Meeker area about 2 miles NE of Custer.
Weather permitting, fire crews from the Black Hills National Forest will begin burning machine piles southeast of Sundance, WY today near Clark Road. Piles are also planned to be ignited near Nemo, SD. Burning

The South Dakota Wildland Fire Rapid City Field Office will be burning approximately 3 acres of slash piles today south of Highway 40 in Keystone, roughly above the Big Thunder Mine. This will continue throughout the winter months as snow cover is adequate. Pile burning is a great tool to reduce fire risk in an area as it eliminates fuels on the ground.Smoke may be visible in the surrounding areas, and can linger for several days after ignition has been completed. Fire crews will continue to monitor the piles as appropriate.
