Ignition to Continue on the Prairie Prescribed Fire

Fire officials are planning to continue ignition of the Prairie prescribed fire on the Black Hills National Forest today, Friday, December 12.

Starting mid-morning, fire crews plan to burn about 160 acres.

The prescribed burn will take place approximately 2 miles southwest of Hisega, 4 miles southeast of Pactola Reservoir and 1 mile east of Hwy 16.

Fire will be confined primarily to south-facing slopes and bordered by snow and frozen fuels limiting fire behavior on north-facing slopes. Crews will continue to monitor the burn after ignition is complete.

Smoke may be visible for several days from Highway 385, Sheridan Lake Road, and Rapid City.

Smoke from this fire may impact visibility on Highway 44.  Motorists in the area are urged to use caution.

For more information on the Black Hills National Forest, visit http://www.fs.usda.gov/blackhills.

The media contact for this prescribed fire is Beth Doten, (605) 440-0263.

Wildlife Loop Fire

-The fire was sized to be 250.4 acres
-Burning in the old Four Mile Fire burn scar in Custer State Park
-State, federal, and local VFDs responded
-Cause is under investigation

As of 4:30 on November 29, one State resource will remain on scene to monitor the fire, all other resources have been released. Since we are expecting much colder weather and the possibility of snow, fire activity is expected to be minimal. There will be a lot of mop up efforts caused by dead and down fuels from the previous fire. Fire officials will continue to monitor and order resources for mop up as appropriate.

As of November 30, a thin layer of snow has fallen over the fire. Firefighters will continue to monitor the fire and order resources as needed.

Prescribed Fire ignited in Southern Black Hills

Oct. 21, 2013

Custer, SDSouth Dakota Wildland Fire Division, Custer State Park, Black Hills National Forest and Wind Cave National Park are continuing ignition on the Norbeck Section 2 prescribed fire today.

The 1,938 acre project unit is located on State, Federal and private land and is approximately 4 miles northeast of Pringle, South Dakota.

The interagency prescribed fire is a cooperative effort with grant funding provided by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Officials said this grant funding helps meet land management objectives that otherwise could not have been accomplished due to budget constraints.

Objectives of the burn are to improve wildlife habitat, provide quality forage, and reduce hazardous fuels in an effort to create and maintain a forested landscape that inhibits the spread of unwanted fire to crowns of trees.

Some areas will be closed during implementation and include:
  • Highway 87 will be closed at the intersection of 87 and Road 341
  • Intersection of Highway 87 and 391
  • NPS 5 will be closed at Highway 87 and NPS 5
  • Fourmile draw road (CSP 7) will be entirely closed
The closures will remain in effect from Monday, Oct. 20, beginning at 7 a.m. through Wednesday, Oct. 22, ending at 6 p.m.

Smoke may be visible from Custer, South Dakota and surrounding areas, and can linger for several days after ignition has been completed. Fire crews will secure, patrol, and monitor fire lines for as long as needed.
