02/22/17 - Black Hills National Forest Pile Burning Information


  • Mystic RD will be burning piles tomorrow, Thursday, 02/23/17, weather permitting. The piles are located near the Keystone exit on Highway 16. Smoke may be visible from Hwy 16 and Three Forks.


  • Mystic RD will also be burning piles on 02/23/17 near Hill City, weather permitting. Piles are located west of Hill City near Battle Axe and Reno Gulch Rds.

UPDATE - Pretty Flower Fire
  • Declared 100% contained as of 10 am Wednesday, 02/22/17
  • No structures damaged or destroyed
  • Crews continued mop-up near Rushmore Ranch Road; please be aware of increased traffic in the area as roads are re-opened to local traffic

  • State, Federal, and Local firefighters responding
  • Structures are threatened

  • Apparent structure fire that spread onto wildland
  • Will update as more info becomes available

  • Fully contained at 4 pm on 12/18/17
  • Turned over to Custer State Park Field Office for patrol and final check

Update 02/21

  • The Playhouse Fire was called 100% contained at 4:00 pm on Saturday, Feb 18
  • Has been turned over to Custer State Park Field Office for patrol and final check

1:10 pm Update

  • The Playhouse Fire is now 35% contained
  • Cause has been determined to be escaped burn piles

  • Due to more accurate mapping, the fire size is 24.03 acres

  • Located 1/2 mile north of Center Lake in Custer State Park
  • Estimated size is 30 acres and was reported around midnight
  • Local and South Dakota Wildland Fire resources have responded overnight along with a privately owned dozer
  • Additional resources are responding this morning to include Forest Service, Department of Corrections Handcrews, and both the state Black Hat and Bear Mountain Handcrews for a full suppression effort
  • Good progress is being made on containment
  • Cause is under investigation

  • Custer State Park will continue pile burning efforts along the Wildlife Loop Road in the vicinity of the Custer State Park Airport today and Friday.

Mystic fire is burning handpiles south of Carter Drive down to McGee Siding today and tomorrow.

2/1/2017 South Dakota Wildland Fire Pile Burning Information


  • The Black Hat and Bear Mountain Handcrews will be burning slash piles in the Hermosa, Rockerville, and High Country areas throughout the week.  
  • The Hot Springs Field Office is currently burning one large pile on the east side of Angostura Recreation Area.
  • The Hot Springs Field Office is also burning piles in conjunction with South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks on the Battle Mountain GPA.
  • Custer State Park is burning machine piles beginning this afternoon around Mt. Coolidge and in the Center Lake Area.  Burning will continue tomorrow in the areas of Mt. Coolidge and along the Needles Highway.

      Beginning today, Hell Canyon fire will be burning piles west/southwest of Custer, SD down Pleasant Valley Road, continuing for the next two to three days.
