The Black Hat Handcrew is burning slash piles on Cavern Crest Road near Johnson Siding off of Highway 44 today, Tuesday, December 17. Crews will continue to tend and monitor slash piles until they are dead out. Smoke may be visible for several days in the surrounding areas.

• Firefighters are burning 6 large landing piles in the Pleasant Valley Area. Smoke may be visible for several days.

Mystic (Central Hills)

• Crews are burning along Silver City Road.
• Starting 2/14, crews will be burning approximately 9 miles NW of Hill City, SD above the Deerfield Park subdivision. Smoke may be seen from Deerfield Road, East Slate Road and surrounding areas for several days.

Bearlodge (WY)

• Firefighters are burning piles near Reynolds Road, approximately 10 miles SE of Sundance, WY.

Officials appreciate the support from local communities and said that reducing fuels this time of year makes fire suppression operations safer during the summer months.

Black Hills National Forest

• Mystic fire (central hills) will be burning piles approximately 2 miles east of Hill City on Old Hill City Road, north of Ford Mountain and west of Ford Mountain Road. Smoke may be visible for several days in the surrounding areas.

• Mystic fire is also burning west of the intersection of Hwy 385 and W Hwy 44, ¼ mile up Silver City Road.

• Beginning today, Northern Hills fire will be burning east of Nemo, SD near the Piedmont Fire Trail, south of Nemo, north of Steamboat Rock Campground and in the Dalton Lake area.

Black Hills National Forest

• Northern Hills fire will be burning piles today in Erskine Gulch North of Steamboat Rock picnic & tent camping area.

• Mystic fire (central hills) is burning handpiles south of Pinegrove. Smoke may be visible in the Neck Yoke and Rockerville area.

February 6, 2019

Black Hills National Forest is burning machine piles off of Forest Service Road 150, located near Sheridan Lake Road and Nordsman Road. Smoke may be visible from Rapid City and surrounding areas for the next several days.

The Forest will also be burning piles, starting 2/7/19, down Pass Creek Road and Pleasant Valley Road about 8 miles SW of Custer, SD. They will also be burning in the Meeker area about 2 miles NE of Custer.

February 4, 2019

Black Hills National Forest may continue burning piles this week if conditions allow.  

Possible areas that may have piles burned include:

1. Storm Hill hand piles located 2 miles east of Hill City.

2. Sunny-side hand pile units north of Silver City.

3. Ester machine pile unit located approximately 6 miles NE of Hill City. Near Hwy 385, Calumet Rd, Sheridan Lake Rd.

4. Machine piles located east of Nemo along the Piedmont Fire Trail.

5. Hand piles off Merrit Estes Road.

6. Hand piles near Paha Sapa Camp on the east side of HWY 385. 

Smoke may be visible for several days in the surrounding areas.

Black Hills National Forest Pile Burning:

Northern Hills Ranger District will be burning piles 1 mile south of Crystal Mountain, or about 5 miles east of Roubaix Lake, or 5 miles west of Nemo, SD.

January 29, 2019 Pile Burning on Black Hills National Forest

Weather permitting, fire crews from the Black Hills National Forest will begin burning machine piles southeast of Sundance, WY today near Clark Road.  Piles are also planned to be ignited near Nemo, SD.  Burning operations will continue across the Black Hills National Forest this winter as conditions permit.

Slash Pile Burning south of Keystone 1/03/2019

The South Dakota Wildland Fire Rapid City Field Office will be burning approximately 3 acres of slash piles today south of Highway 40 in Keystone, roughly above the Big Thunder Mine. This will continue throughout the winter months as snow cover is adequate. Pile burning is a great tool to reduce fire risk in an area as it eliminates fuels on the ground.Smoke may be visible in the surrounding areas, and can linger for several days after ignition has been completed. Fire crews will continue to monitor the piles as appropriate.
