Fort Meade Recreation Area Prescribed Fire

STURGIS, S.D. –   The Bureau of Land Management South Dakota Field Office will be conducting a prescribed burn on the Fort Meade Recreation Area near Sturgis today through Friday, weather permitting.

Firefighters are planning on burning approximately 250 acres.  Resource objectives are to maintain existing stands of older growth Ponderosa Pine, control insect and disease infestations, maintain and enhance native plant species, and reduce hazardous fuels accumulation.  This prescribed burn will protect the resource values of the Fort Meade Recreation Area and the adjacent residential property from wildland fire.

Support agencies for this event include South Dakota Wildland Fire Division, Black Hills National Forest, Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department (VFD), Spearfish VFD, and Rapid City Fire Department.

Smoke will be visible in the surrounding areas, and can linger for several days after ignition has been completed. Fire crews will secure, patrol, and monitor fire lines as appropriate for public and firefighter safety.  For more information on smoke management, please visit:  http://gpfireinfo.blogspot.com/p/smoke-management.html
