Ignition to Continue on the Prairie Prescribed Fire

Fire officials are planning to continue ignition of the Prairie prescribed fire on the Black Hills National Forest today, Friday, December 12.

Starting mid-morning, fire crews plan to burn about 160 acres.

The prescribed burn will take place approximately 2 miles southwest of Hisega, 4 miles southeast of Pactola Reservoir and 1 mile east of Hwy 16.

Fire will be confined primarily to south-facing slopes and bordered by snow and frozen fuels limiting fire behavior on north-facing slopes. Crews will continue to monitor the burn after ignition is complete.

Smoke may be visible for several days from Highway 385, Sheridan Lake Road, and Rapid City.

Smoke from this fire may impact visibility on Highway 44.  Motorists in the area are urged to use caution.
