4:45 p.m. Update: Fish Wildfire Continues to Burn Near Sundance, WY

Sundance, Wyo., August 1, 2022 – Fire crews continue to fight the Fish Fire, 7 miles south of Sundance, Wyo. and east of Wyoming Highway 585.

Due to hot, dry, windy conditions, and steep & rugged terrain, the fire has progressed to the East and is threatening the Canyon Springs subdivision. Crews are actively engaged providing structure protection around residences.

Crews also worked to build containment lines while air attack resources, including two Type 1 (heavy) helicopters, a Type 3 helicopter and airtankers, made multiple retardant drops from the air.

A Multi Mission Aircraft (MMA) from the State of Colorado mapped the fire perimeter at 527 acres as of noon today. The fire started on private land, is 0% contained, and human caused.

Residences South of Canyon Springs Road to the south end of the fire and east of Wyoming Highway 585 are still under evacuation.

An area closure remains in place south of Clark Road to Reynolds Road, south to Moskee and west to Wyoming Highway 585. For public and firefighter safety, the public is asked to stay away from the area until it is safe to return.

A type 3 team from the State of Wyoming Division of Forestry will arrive at 6 p.m. tonight for in briefing.

Smoke can be seen in multiple directions and fire officials ask the public to use caution while driving in smokey conditions. For more information on smoke impacts, visit https://www.airnow.gov/wildfires/.

Please do not fly Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS), also known as drones, in the wildfire area. “If You Fly, We Can’t” campaign emphasizes the serious risks posed to firefighter and public safety from unauthorized drone flights during wildfire suppression operations.

“Thank you to the State of WY, State of SD, Crook County and all of the federal, state and local agencies that responded to this fire,” said Mike Gosse, Bearlodge District Ranger, Black Hills National Forest. “Conditions on this fire are challenging and we appreciate the quick and professional response from our interagency partners.”

The Fish Fire was reported yesterday (7/31/22) at approximately 11:30 a.m.
