Feb 1, 2022 - Machine and Hand Piles to be burned


USFS to burn machine and hand piles

Starting February 1, 2022 Fire Staff from the Black Hills National Forest will begin burning machine pile located on the north and south side of Brownsville Road extending from North Rochford Road east to Brownsville.

Piles are located on approximately 800 acres. If conditions are favorable, burning may continue up to 2 weeks.

The Black Hills National Forest is also planning to burn 50 hand piles starting today (Feb. 1) - Thurs. (Feb. 3). The project is located approximately 10 miles SE of Sundance, WY.



Black Hills National Forest North Zone Fire (Spearfish, SD & Sundance, WY) burned approx. 200 hand piles in Spearfish Canyon last week.
 
Crews are working to reduce surface fuels from past tornado events in the Canyon, with particular attention to important values at risk (homes, watersheds, etc.).
 
The piles are located between Cheyenne Crossing and Savoy along HWY 14A.

As conditions permit (including snow coverage), fire crews plan to burn an additional 500-1000 hand & machine piles (in the Canyon) this winter.

January 25, 2022 - Pile Burning

    Spearfish Canyon Fuels Project

Northern Hills fire will be burning a mix of hand and machine piles in Spearfish Canyon, beginning tomorrow, Jan. 26, 2022, thru winter, as conditions permit. Crews are working to reduce surface fuels from past tornado events in the Canyon, with particular attention to important values at risk (homes, watersheds, etc.). The piles are located between Cheyenne Crossing and Savoy along HWY 14A.

    • Coil Project: Located SE of Sundance, WY

        12:30 p.m. Update: Pile Burning is underway in the Coil Project Area, 1/25/22.

9:30 a.m. Bearlodge fire (located in Sundance, WY) will be burning mechanical piles today from a tornado clean-up project (Coil Project) 12 - 15 air miles SE of Sundance, conditions permitting. There are approximately 200 piles (from Moskee Road to Sand Creek to Williams Gulch) that crews are planning to burn within the next 3-4 days.

January 24, 2022 - Pile Burning

South Dakota Wildland Fire Division

The South Dakota Wildland Fire Division will be burning approximately 10 acres of small slash piles this week in the Terry Peak (northern Black Hills) area. The purpose of burning slash is to reduce the hazardous fuels which are created by thinning projects. Smoke may be visible and smoldering material may continue to burn for several days. Firefighters will continue to monitor and check the piles until they are extinguished.

January 21, 2022 - Pile Burning

Black Hills National Forest

Mystic fire (central hills) is planning to burn piles located approx. 7 miles west of Rochford, SD. These piles are products of the Whitetail timber sale. With snow in the forecast, crews are planning to begin ignitions Friday January 21, and may resume pile burning Monday January 24, as conditions permit. Smoke may affect the Rochford area and the Rapid Creek drainage.

The Black Hills National Forest fire crew from the Northern Hills will be burning 4 hand piles beginning on January 20, 2022. These piles are located along Hanna Road in the Northern Black Hills.  They estimate the project may take 2 days.

Jan. 5, 2022 - Pile Burning

Forest Managers are working to reduce hazardous fuels across the Black Hills National Forest.

Beginning today, (1/5/22), the Hell Canyon Ranger District (southern hills) will be burning piles near Sidney Park road and Glen Erin road, approximately 2.5 Miles SE of Custer, SD. Fire crews plan to burn in this area for several weeks, conditions permitting.

Starting tomorrow, (1/6/22), Mystic fire crews (central hills) are planning to burn piles approx. 7 miles south of Deerfield Lake and 12 miles west of Hill City, SD. Smoke may be visible from Ditch Creek Road and Six Mile Road.

Jan. 4, 2022 - Pile Burning

Black Hills National Forest Northern Hills firefighters are planning to burn machine piles today from the Trails Head/Rifle Pit area, north to the Wagon Canyon and Timber Gulch area and will continue to burn over the next several weeks in this area, as conditions permit.
 
Smoke will be visible and may impact local communities. Smoldering material may continue to burn days after burning operations are completed. Firefighters continually monitor and check the piles for several days after they have been lit.

USFS fire crews will be burning a slash pile at the USFS Spearfish Work Center on Jan 3-4.   The work center is located approximately 2 miles southwest of Spearfish, SD along Tinton Road.
