August 12, 2021 - 7:00 p.m. News Release

 Fire fighters worked throughout the day to secure the perimeter of the Kirk Hill fire.  The fire was 100 % contained today at 5:00 p.m.

Crews will continue to patrol and conduct mop up operations in the coming days. Smoke will be present for the next several days as well.

The size of the fire is approximately 80 acres.

No structures were lost in the fire.

Numerous federal, state and local resources responded, including a type 1 and type 3 helicopter, dozers, engines, hand crews and the Tatanka Hotshots. A heavy air tanker also responded and dropped several loads of retardant.

Firefighters worked through the night to suppress the Kirk Hill wildfire that started yesterday afternoon near Sturgis, S.D. and burned approximately 80 acres.

Fire officials stated they have a line around the fire with a combination of dozer lines, hand lines and roads. Crews will focus on mopping up the perimeter today to gain full containment.

The predicted favorable weather conditions (cooler temperatures and higher relative humidity) today will aid the firefighting effort.

Smoke will be present for the next several days.

Location: Lawrence County, 5 miles southwest of Sturgis, 7 miles west of Tilford, 3.75 miles northeast of Roubaix.

Size:  80 acres

Resources: Federal, State and local. Multiple ground and air resources including type 1 and typ3 helicopter, heavy air tanker and Tatanka Hot Shots.

Cause: Unknown

Containment:  100% contained at 5:00 p.m., August 12, 2021

A wildfire is currently burning at Kirk Hill, located approximately 5 miles southwest of Sturgis, S.D.

 Numerous federal, state and local resources are responding, including a type 1 and type 3 helicopter, dozers, engines, hand crews and the Tatanka Hotshots. A heavy air tanker is on scene. 

 At 5:00 p.m., the fire was estimated at 40 acres.
