Fire Managers have started ignitions for the final day of this prescribed fire. The objectives of maintaining existing stands of older growth Ponderosa Pine, controlling insect and disease infestations, maintaining and enhance native plant species, and reducing hazardous fuels accumulation continue to be met. Today the intention is to burn 106 acres. Questions about the burn should be directed to the Bureau of Land Management, South Dakota Field Office at 605.892.2000.

The objectives were met yesterday on the Fort Meade Recreation Area Prescribed Fire and 91 acres were completed. No moisture was received last night over the burn area so firefighters remain in "prescription" to burn according to their Burn Plan. The acreage goal for today is 88 acres. Questions about the burn should be directed to the Bureau of Land Management, South Dakota Field Office at 605.892.2000.

Fort Meade Recreation Area Prescribed Fire
STURGIS, S.D. – The Bureau of Land Management South Dakota
Field Office will be conducting a prescribed burn on the Fort Meade Recreation
Area near Sturgis today through Friday, weather permitting.
Firefighters are
planning on burning approximately 250 acres.
Resource objectives are to maintain existing stands of older growth
Ponderosa Pine, control insect and disease infestations, maintain and enhance
native plant species, and reduce hazardous fuels accumulation. This prescribed burn will protect the resource
values of the Fort Meade Recreation Area and the adjacent residential property
from wildland fire.
Support agencies for
this event include South Dakota Wildland Fire Division, Black Hills National
Forest, Sturgis Volunteer Fire Department (VFD), Spearfish VFD, and Rapid City
Fire Department.
Smoke will be visible in
the surrounding areas, and can linger for several days after ignition has been
completed. Fire crews will secure, patrol, and monitor fire lines as
appropriate for public and firefighter safety.
