February 25, 2020 - Pile Burning


South Dakota Wildland Fire Division


  • The Bear Mountain Handcrew is currently burning approximately 50 slash piles on the Stone Tree Project. This is located an estimated 5 miles north of Rapid City. 
  • The Black Hat Hancrew is currently burning approximately 100 slash piles in the Cavern Crest area which is located near Johnson Siding.
  • The Custer District Office is burning approximately 40 machine piles south of American Center Road near the western boundary of Custer State Park. Additionally, six machine piles will be burned on Playhouse Road, just off of Needles Highway.
Crews will continue to tend and monitor the slash piles until they are dead out. Smoke may be visible for several days in the surrounding areas.

  • Hell Canyon fire (southern hills) is planning to burn piles 2 miles northwest of Custer, SD today and tomorrow (2/18-2/19).

Conditions permitting, Mystic Fire is planning to burn hand piles 15 miles west of Rapid City, SD starting tomorrow, 2/12/20 and continuing for the next several days. Smoke will be visible from Highway 385 and Rochford Road.

February 4, 2020 - Pile Burning

The Black Hat Handcrew is currently burning approximately 150 slash piles in the Boulder Canyon area today (between Sturgis and Deadwood). If conditions are appropriate, firefighters may continue to burn tomorrow. Crews will monitor the piles for several days. Smoke may be visible for several days in the surrounding areas. Nebraska National Forests & Grasslands

The Pine Ridge Ranger District will be burning slash piles in multiple locations throughout the week of February 3-7. These locations include: near the Hudson-Meng Education and Research Center, two miles South of the Hudson-Meng Education and Research Center, Pasture 20 thirteen miles South of Chadron, and Pasture 35 seven miles Southeast of Chadron. Black Hills National Forest

Mystic fire in the central Black Hills will be burning 2 machine piles today (2/3/20) located on Twin Springs and Old Hill City Road. Smoke will be visible from Old Hill City Road and Highway 16.

Mystic fire is also burning machine piles 3 miles NW of Hill City, SD and will continue to burn for several days, weather depending. Smoke may be visible from Hill City, Hwy 16 and Deerfield Road.

Hell Canyon fire in the southern Black Hills will be burning large piles 2 miles west of Custer, SD for the next several days as conditions permit. Smoke may be visible from Highway 16 for several days.
